Teachers Visit Industry! Summer Externships Wrap Up...

Teachers Visit Industry!

Every summer, high school science teachers and community-based organizational partners from our region participate in PMSP's half-day externships to learn about careers that bring industry experiences to life for young people. These externships provide teachers a “sneak peak” into STEM career fields offering a living wage and skills students need in order to be competitive. Being able to suggest varied careers with different entry-level requirements can open doors for students.

Here's a recap of our summer:

  • 9 externships with companies from the Portland regions four major high-wage/high-demand job sectors: Technology, Healthcare, Construction, and Manufacturing

  • 32 educators: High School Science, Math, Teachers On Special Assignment (TOSA), and Out-of-School educators.

  • 1,700 students impacted!

Reactions from our externship participants:

"Math is important!  The math I do in biology class in HS does not just have to be "preparation for college" (my students are really unsure about college) but also "preparation for your job in the trades". This field appears to require a lot of math!" - High School Biology Teacher

"I loved hearing from employees at PGE and from the Health Panel, especially from employees that were women and BIPOC who possibly had a different path getting to their jobs. Such amazing people!"  - High School Science Teacher

"I really enjoyed the externship today. One of the conundrums I have with NGSS standards is how to weave engineering into a biology curriculum. It gave me so many ideas." - High School Biology Teacher

"Learning that you don't need to go straight into a 4 year college or community college to get your start in health care" - Out-of-School Educator

Thank you to the following companies for your partnership in this year's externships: Intel,  NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center, Kaiser Permanente, Providence, O’Neill Construction, PGE, Women in 3D Printing, Clean Water Services, Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute, Wallis Engineering.
